Waooo...good job, matt! it compiles fine with avr-gcc and...run is now perfect. What was the problem?

It was avr-gcc (and AVR in general) being useless. It can't cope with more than 128K of flash unless you add a special linker flag to allow it to break the internal boundaries.

That's what happens when you have a lowly 8-bit MCU and try to give it too much memory - things get in a real mess.
