When I search for a term which is NOT in the document, the search field turns black completely.
When I search for a term which is contained in several lines just below each other, it replaces more than one occurrence at the same time.
How am I supposed to use the search and replace facility?

Eww, that search box gets

Eww, that search box gets messed up if there's nothing found. Why on earth is that happening? It's just a text box. It should be going red, actually, to indicate "not found".
As for search and replace,
REPLACE
should only replace the one instance that is currently selected.ALL
should replace everything. I can't getREPLACE
to do more than just the one instance...I've solved the black problem

Odd that it wasn't working before... It must have been a momentary hiccup...
